Week 1 - Lab Safety and Intro. to Anti-Class Science

1/22/2014

Welcome again.  It was great to meet everyone last week, especially in the format of the dilemma consultancy-style POLs.

On Thursday, we began our laboratory safety training as students were tasked to create a safety poster due this Wednesday (tomorrow).  This safety training will continue throughout the week.

Concurrently, we will be exploring our notions of science in ways that typically are not emphasized in a traditional classroom.  Some main themes will involve our attempt to define it in terms of its role in society, its purpose in progressing an understanding of natural phenomena or technology, and its potential to empower people in pursuing a curiosity or protect themselves against charlatans of the world.  The skills sets emphasized in science textbooks will  serve as tools to enable these scientific purposes, and my hope is that students will use them as such to effectively participate and grasp the value of science that is too often marginalized in science education.

In short, this means that I would like my students to use our time together to push their understanding in science to pursue their own curiosities and realize the thrill of discovery.

Reminder:  As stated above, Lab Safety Posters are due on Wednesday January 22.
