Unit 4 Video Posts

2/20/2014

Often times science deals with the abstract - conceptual notions that many students have difficulty wrapping their minds around.  I do my best to supply materials and explanations, but I also feel that visual supports could be a great resource for students.

My goal is to collect videos and create a page where students have access to them.  You(current student) can help in this process.  There are three things that are needed, and I can offer unit credit for each process listed below.

  1. Find a video that covers the material we are investigating for this Unit. Submit the video in the comments section of this blog post, making sure to add the link. In the comments box, list the concept(s) that are covered in the video.(5pts.)

  2. Do an in depth review of an already posted video.  Reply to a posted video and address the following criteria:  Did you find this video useful in developing an understanding of the material?  What works?  What doesn't work? What did you learn?  Who, if anybody, would you recommend this video to? (5pts.)

  3. Overview all of the videos that were posted and list the top three, making sure to point out your top choice.  Briefly explain your reasoning for choosing those videos and why the one you chose as your top pick was best.  This can only be performed when at least 6 videos are posted. (5pts.)

Important:  Make sure to fill out an Independent Assignment sheet for completing any of the three tasks above.

This video is about electron configuration.

When watching this video i just felt like it was a review of what we had learned in class which helped a bit but in all didnt really expand my understanding of the topic any further. What worked was that I could look back over the video if i didnt understand it all the way. What didnt work was it was hard to listen to really because it was the same toned voice continuely talking about something.

I thought the way he explained how the electron configurations work was really simple to follow. Before I was kind of confused with the pattern electron configurations follow, but with the visual aid it made sense. I think the visual aids help a lot, and that he would go through the whole process with us. The only thing I didn't like was that he would begin working on something, and then decide not to because it was too complex, which just left me wondering. Besides that I found this video very helpful because the patterns to electron configuration seem logical to me now and easier to follow.

I thought that This was a really good video, What I liked about it the most was that it was very relatable to what we were learning about in unit four. It was however hard to listen to on my computer but I managed to make it work

This video is about how we cant actaully touch anything. Its a pretty wierd thing to think about, that we have never actaully come in real physical contact with someone or something besides our mothers.

This video was not entirely relevant to what we have been learning for the past few days, however I found it super interesting and pretty depressing as well. I didn't find it that helpful to what we are learning right now, but I did really enjoy watching it. I would recommend this video for someone who is looking for cool information but already understands the topic pretty well.

I think the only thing that really related this to class was the explanation of the Atom in the very beginning . It is really interesting knowing that I can never touch or feel anything in my life and know that it is true.

This video explains how electron shells work.

I think this video was helpful in understanding electron configuration and how to write out how many electrons go in each shell depending on the atom. I only got confused when he started talking about the 2p shell and what do do when you have 6, 7 or 8 electrons. But I think the only reason i didn't understand that part was because I didn't really learn it that way in the beginning, as most of this stuff I have already learned so it was difficult for me to understand that way of explaining it. Other than that, the video worked for me and I can see how it would help someone understand how to use that method of figuring out electron configurations if they were having trouble with it.

I really think this video helped me understand how the electron shells work. I liked how it was a real person and not just writing on a screen. I think thats because it is more personal...but maybe that is just me. I like how he used the bus metaphor, it made a lot of sense how only a certain amount of electrons can fit into each "bus"/ sub shells. I also like that the video isn't 20 minutes long. I am somewhat confused on 4d and 4f because I didn't know they existed I thought only p and s existed. Thats the only problem I had with the video. But other than that the video was really good for someone who is just learning about the electron shells.

This video explains how to do electron configurations, which is one of the main things I struggled on while learning about atoms.
The last 2 minutes is really the only thing that helped me and is related to our topics, but it was explained really well and I couldn't find any other video that was better at explaining how to do electron configurations by writing it out in the table-like diagram.

This video explains the electron configuration a tad bit, but it goes more into detail on the d-block. This video really helped me understand what happens to the d-orbitals and how to configure them. I think this video is very useful to watch when you know the basics of electron configuration. It is a good video to watch to really understand how to configure electrons. Khan Academy uses a basic periodic table and it actually makes a whole lot of sense.

I don't know if it is just me, but your link takes me to a page saying the URL is a bad gateway. Might want to try re-posting the link

*Top 3*
1) I like Erica's video the most. I like this video because it goes over the electron configuration...at the end. But in the first part of the video it tells us why we are doing it/what we are doing when we are configuring electrons. It also wasn't too long or boring.

2) I like Jake's choice. Not because I also posted it. It isn't my favorite because It doesn't go over the complete configuration...but it explains how the d block works. This part of electron configuration confused me the most so I felt like this video was very helpful.

3) I really like Noah's video. Even though its not completely about a worksheet we are doing in class or a experiment, but it talks about atoms and is about the subject we are learning about. I like how this video isn't really about a worksheet we did but its about how electrons and repel each other. And we don't actually feel us touching each other...we feel our bodies repel each other. I enjoyed how up beat and interesting the video was. I didn't even mind watching it.

TOP 3

1) I think Jake's video was really helpful at explaining how to use the periodic table to do electron configurations. He went through all the steps and it really did make the method more clear to me.

2) Victoria's video showed a different way of how to configure electrons and it was very thorough and easy to follow. I liked how we wrote out everything for you to see and follow along with.

3) I think Julian's video went into detail a lot about just what the atom was and the basics of its components. It's important we know that before we start learning in depth about the atom, so he video was very helpful.

Top 3 videos:

1. Jakes- This video made the process seem much more logical. Before this none of it really made that much sense, as I would often end up confused. But now I understand why it works the way it does.

2. Ericas- I appreciated the shortcut he provided, and that he left notes on the side for us to check. I also like that he did some of them with us so we could get adjusted to the process.

3. Julians- I liked how she explained the basics about the atom, because they're 'basics' they're often overlooked, but they are things that are important to understand. I found out some things that I didn't know about the atom before watching this video, such as why the atomic mass of some have decimals.

This video is about electron configuration. He talks about one example and has a clear voice. He's not that exciting but the video is only 4 minutes so it's easy to stay concentrated.

This video is about a 3D view of a bunch of atoms. They took pictures of different angles an then put them together. It was cool to see what they look like.

in the video the Russian guy makes some simple to try experiments like the one with the balloon, which was basically showing how water conducted the heat of the flame so that the balloon didn't pop.i also liked the napkin one where he transfers water from one glass to the other with just a napkin, even though it did take a long time.but by far my favorite part of the video was the last experiment where he makes a COOL glowing ice ball(or cube?).

This video is really cool. It doesn't really teach anything, but I didn't know that you could move atoms one by one. It's the world's smallest animation.
