Unit 1 - "Whatsa Matter" (Italian accent)

9/9/2014

For Unit 1 we will shift our focus from laboratory safety to matter and its various phases.

Below are materials related to our work, including notes, details about the work we will do, and worksheets.  Please feel free to contact me about any concerns or questions.

None of the worksheets are required, although they do provide practice in building and reinforcing the concepts of chemistry that we are focusing on for this unit.  As such, there is academic merit to completing them.  Notes were provided in class and are also available from the class notetaker, who's blog you can access by clicking the link to the right.

In addition, any science articles of interest  for this unit should be added to the comments section of this blog post, and remember to add your name!

I typed in google "Number one scientific discovery", and I got the discovery magazine website. From here I chose the article that caught my eye.

This article was generally about a recent new discovery of a new dinosaur believed to be the largest yet. It was compared to popular dinosaurs that are already known to be large, such as the T-Rex, and the Brachiosaurus. The Dreadnaughtus was seven times larger than the T-Rex, and the name is translated to no fear because of it's large size and another creature's inability to attack it.

The main thing in this article that struck me was the fact that it was nearly impossible to kill due to it;s huge size and that this discovery was made in the first place. I never could have imagined something as large as this, and it really surprised me.

I found the article linked above from researching Google Glasses. A new discovery I found was the Cyborg Unplug device.

Essentially this article explains what Cyborg Unplug is and its purpose. This new device is a wireless anti-survelliance system for work and at home. It detects and blocks devices that may be invasive or cause a "risk". For example, Google Glasses, Drop cam, drones/ copters, and some other network dependent surveillance machines. The article is informative and gives elaborate information on whether the device is legal, and how it exactly works with wi-fi.

The reason why I decided to write about this article was because the entire idea surprised me. The entire Cyborg Unplug accessory brought up a lot of thoughts in my head about privacy, safety, and surveillance. It makes sense that science grows over time, so along with inventions like the Google Glasses there will be inventions like the Cyborg Unplug attempting to counter them.

I looked up new scientific discoveries and I found one that I found interesting "New Technique Helps find hidden consciousness in coma patients".

The article was about that some people that were label as a "vegetable" in comatose may actually be aware of there surroundings but unable to express it. They did experiments with participants with healthy people and comatose patients using (EEG) electroencephalography and mathematical tools to EEG data to find patterns of communication across brain regions.

What I found very interesting was that patients who were thought to be comatose and thought to be completely vegetative actually showed some patterns similar to those of healthy people. With this discovery people can't pull the plug on them just because they are unable to show visible awareness but they are mentally aware to what is going on.
