Lab Safety

Before we begin handling chemicals and performing experiments, we need to become aware of all safety considerations associated with laboratory work.  Our safety training, culminating on Friday, highlights the following things to understand in an effort to create a space where the safety of yours and those around you is assured:

Awareness of potential hazards
  • knowledge of chemicals
  • situational awareness
  • labeling and signage

Proper lab practice and behavior
  • maintaining a safe work space
  • clean up and disposal
  • equipment usage and chemical handling

In the case of an accident or spill
  • who to inform
  • how to react

To reinforce our understanding of lab safety and serve as reminders, students are expected to create a safety poster that highlights a specific consideration.  These posters are due by Friday August 29th at the beginning of class, and can be turned in as a hard copy or through a shared folder.  Additional access to the shared folder is available by clicking the appropriate button below.

The significant learning experiences for me generally happen when the subject or project is fun, intriguing, and interesting while still tying into education and lessons. An example for me personally was last year when we were learning about music. We were learning about everything from sound waves, to instrument vibrations, and even how to play instruments themselves. The more interesting a subject is for me, the more I pay attention and learn in the long run. You could ask me a question about anything during that project and if I didn't memorize it, its in my old notebook somewhere. I was so into that project that I'm hooked on playing guitar and considering a career in the field of music.
