Today we watched a video in which Stephen Colbert interviewed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson about science and it's relationship with our society and culture. Here is the video: In the comments section below. Please share any thoughts, questions, or things that struck you. Feel free to post as much as you want, or to respond to your peers.

MAN ANIMAL HYBRIDS.... anyone have any feedback about this? Should this be something real?! I wanna be half eagle, I desperately want to fly.

It sounds really really cool. But the question is would we just be able to create different new species whenever we want if we did this. And if we could do you think that would be a good thing?
Micah
8/29/2013 12:11:43 pm
I'm sure we wouldn't be able to fund the money for creating a hybrid animal when ever we wanted. But if we did have that technology I think the first thing we would make is a manbearpig. #I'mCearalGuys
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:15:14 pm
Yeah but the manbearpig (which sounds amazing) would die at the end of its life span because I don't think it would be able to reproduce.
Andrew
8/29/2013 12:38:34 pm
no manbearpig, but I did find this:
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:54:22 pm
THATS CRAZY! I didn't know a pig could live with human organs. But would this pig/human be able to reproduce? And if it did what would happen?
Micah

Would that lead to xenotransplantation being the hot new thing in a decade or two. Would this process be unethical?
SamSam
8/29/2013 01:40:31 pm
What's xenotransplantation Micah?

Mars farts though...they're real
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:03:29 pm
Yeah but who's leaving the farts up there? Is this evidence for aliens? If it is we have an answer to the question that people have asked for years: "Do aliens fart?"
Micah
8/29/2013 12:09:49 pm
I think the video said Micro organism under the soil of mars.
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:13:40 pm
Oh yeah thats true! Thx Micah. So what does that mean for us? That Mars might be able to sustain life?
Andrew

Interesting question, SamSam. Perhaps "biological effluences" are part of life and the evolutionary chain no matter where life begins.
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:46:21 pm
Thats true! Do you think that would mean that the bacteria would evolve into something or that there's a possibility that we could maybe live there in the future?
SamSam

I have always been interested in the multi-verse. Does anyone think that this theory is true?
Micah
8/29/2013 12:09:10 pm
I want to believe it's true
Micah
8/29/2013 12:15:42 pm
I would curous of what would be in the different multi-verses. What would the laws of physics be like in those different universes.
SamSam
8/29/2013 12:21:08 pm
Well didn't Andrew say that the laws of physics would be different in each one? So there are infinite possibilities of what could be in each universe I think. I'm not sure though. I would love to live in one where junk food is healthy >:)

Well just a quick fact, if string theory is proven then the multiverse theory goes along with it. In the multiverse anything is possible as there are an infinite amount of universes. A theory is every decision you make creates a parallel universe where you did not make that decision and made a different one instead. Haha so whenever I do something wrong I tell myself, "At least in a parallel universe I didn't do that." Haha x)

Knowledge is not bad. What is bad is what people decide to do in the presence of that knowledge.

Just something that stuck with me.

great quote!
Sharon
8/29/2013 01:28:44 pm
It could be all that soldier role-playing in Peter's, but the first thing I thought of when Ricky said "animal hybrids" is, "wouldn't someone use that as a weapon?"
SamSam
8/29/2013 02:08:32 pm
I never thought of that and I agree with you. People could start doing bad with animal hybrids. It is like the quote that Trevor brought up, "Knowledge is not bad. It is what people decide to do in the presence of knowledge." Plus how would animal hybrids benefit us in any way? Other than in the way that the article Andrew shared explains.

One of the quotes I found interesting in the video today was "Beauty lies in the truth." It works for science and in real life. If you don't tell the truth then what's the beauty about that person. Just like in science if there is something not true then the beauty is not in that subject that is true.

What stuck me the most is that "it's better too figure out things, then knowing things". That quote has a lot to do with science or being a scientist because they discover and figure out things. Also if you think about it, it has to do with life. Like math...and other things
Andrew

Couldn't agree more. In the context of school, what does this mean for what you get out of your classes?
Ryan Burila
8/29/2013 03:32:06 pm
A quote that struck me was "Beauty is in the universe and the universe is in us". This spoke to me as I had learned last year that each and every one of us are made up of stardust and energy that has existed since the beginning of time. So, technically, the universe is indeed in us.

If anyone comes back to this, check out the comment he makes beginning at 1:15:10 about "being smart". What do you think about this statement in relation to science and your learning this year? Anyone?
Christian McDonough

i certainly hope that people will find an interest in science rather than simply memorizing facts from a book. once you have a decent understanding of the principals around which are "science", it can become a toolkit that will serve you for life, as well as help you expand your knowledge further.
